Learning Objectives

At the completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Realise the difference between problem solving and managing conflict

  • Identify areas they need to personally develop in order to manage Conflict effectively

  • Acknowledge the need to overcome barriers to communication

  • Have familiarised themselves with a framework for Preparing an Issue for Discussion
    and conducting a potentially difficult discussion

  • Recognise the difference between aggressive and assertive behaviour

  • Understand the causes and impact of unresolved conflict in work-teams and work
    partnerships

  • Gain an insight into Thomas - Kilmann's "conflict handling modes"

  • Develop strategies to engage the "difficult" person in conversation

  • Gain an insight into the causes and impact of unresolved conflict in work-teams and work partnerships

  • Have considered the relationship between their personal style and their capacity to resolve conflict

  • Use Case studies to promote skills development

  • Develop an action plan to promote ongoing enhancement of their abilities
